John helped us find the best house for our needs​ at that time. When ​my husband and I got divorced​, a little over 10 years later, John helped us sell that house and then helped​ each of us find separate homes. John is very knowledgeable about the area and easily understands what his clients need. He​ is a true professional and communicates well and quickly via email, phone or text. And he also ​consistently has the best​ referrals for people/services ​that a new homeowner or seller​ might need. I highly recommend him to anyone who is looking to buy or sell. Negative experience: I went to look at a rental property the other day. The cabin looked like the roof was very weak in places. It was cozy on the inside. Well, the realtor that was showing the place said she would email a application to the place and NEVER did. Also said it's a LAW to do a background and credit check. I've rented without any of these just last year. Plus a 45$ application fee per person is a little steep. This place is money hungry and I'm glad I never paid the 45$

Fantastic experience: My husband and I moved to the St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area from out of state for a job. We knew nothing about the area and had to find a place to rent quickly. The agents at Jaqua acted with urgency and did their best to get us moved into a place as soon as possible. While other places waited almost a week to call us back, the people at Jaqua got back to us in less than a day. The application and leasing process was smooth. Negative experience: The absolute worst rental company I have ever dealt with. I would go VERY far out of my way to never deal with them again. This is an overview. The details are worse, but Google limited me to 4096 characters. See photos. PROPERTY: -Due to baseboard heat and (I assume) terrible insulation, the electric bill for 2921 Pagoda Path in Stevensville, with the heat turned down to 55 or off in rooms we weren't using, and 65 in rooms we were, was almost $400 some winter months. (See attached photo). MAINTENANCE: -It took them almost a month, with repeated nagging and dodging, to deal with a mouse infestation that was there before we moved in. -We reported a problem with our stove tripping the breaker on December 30, and they did not do A THING about it until March 4. They finally replaced the stove on April 8. -On May 9, I reported a loose board at the bottom of our steps. Eventually it was so loose it had to be removed because it was less of a hazard that way. They didn't fix it until September 13, the Friday AFTER they brought a potential new tenant by and found a note in the window apologizing for the step and explaining when we had reported the problem. -On July 15, a maintenance guy came out to fix a stuck outside lock that we used frequently. He got permission to replace it. It was not fixed until they sent out a NEW maintenance guy on September 13. -During our stay with Jaqua, we dealt with THREE different agents as two quit in succession. I can't imagine why people wouldn't want to work for them! -On August 24, our sewer backed up. Their emergency maintenance number just went to the OFFICE voicemail. Fortunately, I had the cell phone number of the technician who had (eventually) done some other service for us. He called me back the next day. When I called on Monday, the office person apologized profusely and pledged to make sure the after-hours emergency line was up and running. The next Saturday, I tested it, and it wasn't. LIES AND TRICKERY -When we finally moved out, I offered to leave the utility bills for potential tenants to look at. Jaqua's representative didn't want that, for obvious reasons. She said she ALWAYS tells people to call the power company and find out what the rates have been the past few months. When I called the power company and asked if that was true, they said they're not even ALLOWED to give out information about previous bills to people other than the customers who incurred them. -Their contract says renters MUST have the carpets professionally cleaned or they will do it and charge it to the security deposit. This clause is in violation of Michigan state law, which SPECIFICALLY says security deposits CANNOT be used for cleaning and this CANNOT be waived in a lease contract. Wish I'd known that BEFORE I hired the carpet cleaner AND paid a $250 cleaning fee. -During our move-out inspection, the agent who checked us out told me they would have to do a "deep clean" on the apartment and that the $250 non-refundable cleaning fee we had already paid would not be sufficient. (This after I had spent several hours cleaning AND hired a professional carpet cleaner). When I explained using a security deposit to cover cleaning is a violation of Michigan State Law, she insisted it was not and we would be charged an additional fee. I was livid. I regretted not recording a video of the place because at that point I had so little faith in Jaqua that I worried they might punch holes in the wall and blame it on me. A week or so later, to their credit, they sent me a notice that our full security deposit would be refunded. IN CONCLUSION: Jaqua is THE WORST. I initially thought about giving them a second star because they did the bare minimum and refunded our full security deposit, WHICH THEY WERE REQUIRED TO DO UNDER LAW and I didn't have to take them to small claims court to get the rest back... but they don't deserve it. When we were looking to buy a house, I told my wife that even if a Jaqua agent was selling our dream home at a bargain price, I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.
