I had a jaded perspective of realtors prior to working with Tim. Our relationships with past realtors always felt undeniably transactional. We always felt rushed toward decisions that may not be in our interest. Thus, we were reluctant to trust their counsel. Then came Tim Freeland. He – and his parents – came to us as a recommendation from a late friend (Rod Magsam) who was a business owner in Northfield for several decades. Our beloved friend always, always gave us the best recommendations, from plumbers to drywall mudders. Tim was patient with us. He was genuine. He has a calm and curious demeanor. He often had knowledge of past homes that sold and we had lamented not bidding on; most homes he could recall from memory. Some houses he’d explain how we’d dodged a bullet, and others he’d acknowledge were truly missed opportunities. Tim and I share a mutual love of history, so we could talk at length about the region and the community. (As you may know, Tim is integral to the annual Defeat of Jesse James Days event. He’s more than just an M.C. or narrator for the renowned reenactments.) Initially, we were determined to go through Tim only for the purchase of a new home. We wanted to sell our home ourselves to save money on the commission. Tim offered the service, but did not pressure us. However, we changed our minds because we were committed to a large family trip in which we didn’t choose the dates, so we needed to sell our house in a timely manner. Tim’s/Edina’s reach likely increased the number of folks who came to see and bid on our home. Although we surely would have made more money selling it ourselves, we have no regrets. Tim took care of so many unexpected things that needed to be addressed in the closing process; needs that ran beyond our trip’s departure date. Tim saved our sanity and possibly our whole summer by taking care of all the last-minute hiccups that arose. For that we remain truly grateful to Tim. As a realtor, Tim doesn’t seem interested in taking the transactional approach. He knows he’s going to be living in the same community as you. As my favorite business professor in said college: "Business shouldn’t be about profit. It needs to be about relationships." I suspect Tim’s approach runs the risk of not making more sales: the more time he spends patiently working with others and building a trusting relationship probably comes at a short-term cost. It’s true: time is money. But if you play the long game, odds are very likely that Tim will be here decades from now, but the realtors who chase the quickest payout will probably fly by night in the pursuit of a quick dollar that’s at the expense of knowing what community means or feels like. As we learned from Tim, despite the higher house prices in Northfield – compared to towns in the surrounding area – people return to Northfield because of its undeniable sense of community. Frankly, we moved into town so we could be closer to the heart of it all. Should we sell our current house in the future, there’s no question who we’re turning to. Tim loves Northfield; he breathes Northfield; Tim Freeland might even *be* Northfield. The only way he could be more Northfield would be if he took a part time job at the Quarterback Club or sang tenor in the St. Olaf Choir! Epilogue Fast forward a few months after the closing on the sale of our previous home. I’m watching Monday Night Football with a buddy of mine who’s gradually purchasing real-estate as rentals. I see him texting mid-game and I ask, “Who are you texting?” (Who texts during a football game!?) He smiles and responds, “Tim Freeland.” I like to think that all of my blathering about Tim had an impact on my friend, but I also know that my buddy is a businessman in the Northfield community. He, too, knows who to trust.
