Negative experience: Talked to James Williams on Friday, he said he was busy with school duties, but could show me a house he had listed on Saturday. I called and left message, texted for an appointment but no response. He never responded. My wife was excited about the challenge and prospect of doing a fixer upper. James told us the owners were living in Florida and were at an age they could no longer do the work required to bring the house back to life. I guess both owner and buyer lose out on this deal due to the lack of professionalism on Appalachian Land Company.

Negative experience: Refrain from booking their properties through Airbnb. Our stay was canceled yesterday afternoon due to their disorganization and simultaneous booking on another platform. Their behavior was extremely disrespectful. "The most they offered was, 'You'll need to address this with Airbnb.'" Disregard the fact that they eagerly accepted our money for the rental. The issue with Airbnb commenced at 3:30 PM ET, and we successfully resolved it by shortly after 8 PM ET. Do not rent from this exceedingly unprofessional group.

Fantastic experience: We couldn't imagine working with any other real estate company. We found a cabin on realtor dot com which was listed by Gayle & Ron Hallstead. We phoned Gayle and she was positively awesome. She handled everything right up to closing. As out-of-town (second home) buyers, we greatly appreciated her assistance. We now have our dream cabin in the mountains and we have Gayle to thank. Not only is she the consummate professional, but she's just the nicest person that you'd ever want to meet. We can't say enough wonderful things about Appalachian Land Company in general and Gayle in particular.

I was very surprised at how they looked out for you. In the process of purchasing a piece of property in Andrews, NC. They looked after getting me septic tank permit prior to closing. Although they don't make much selling land. They understand how to build a customer base. Looking forward to the future.

Fantastic experience: My husband & I flew up from Florida with our friend/realtor to look at some property. Our Florida real estate agent/friend arranged a local agent, Joey Reid to work with us. Joey, was wonderful, kind, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. My husband and I really enjoyed driving around with him looking at properties with him. He took some extra time showing us around downtown Murphy. Everyone in the office was just as kind! I highly recommend having Appalachian Land Company helping you find or build your next property.

Negative experience: Be careful renting from these people! They are not truthful in the advertising! Also charged us a damage fee for damage to furniture inside the cabin that we had nothing to do with! They would not provide photos prior to damage just afterward. No proof that wee had anything to do with it. Virbo took their side (as expected). Just be cautious of who you rent from!

Fantastic experience: My Realtor took time with me to look at all of the possibilities of what I needed in a property in Murphy, North Carolina. I needed property that was close to the town of Murphy, fairly flat (...with the possibility of a terrain that was just a little hilly; but not too much!), under $20,000, and unrestricted. She took time to check out all of the possibilities of what I needed and was patient in every respect with me!!! She even took me to some of the properties that we knew would not work out because of the steepness of the terrain ... simply because I wanted to check them out ...just to be sure if I still might like them. Negative experience: We rented from them July 1-8 at their Eagle Point property and unfortunately we will not rent from this management team again. The lack of communication or concern was unprofessional especially in this day with all the technology. We had issues with animals getting into the garbage cans (plastic and no "bear box") 3 night and called each time to have that addressed. One night we had someone show up at 10p to put a ribbon on the can only to again find garbage in the driveway. I was told that they never had an issue before and this was new to them. We refused to pick up the trash after the 4th day and later that day we were supplied a metal can with a secure lid. On the last day the well had a mechanical issue and we had no water. We understand that there was nothing the management team could have done, except to communicate with us. We called at 8a and were told someone would get back to us, well at 9a we called again and were told they were still working on it. At 10a we were almost loaded up when a neighbor came over to see if there was anything he could do to help us. Not the management team nor the maintenance but a neighbor! When the key was returned all I kept being told was that this was out of their control. I am not debating that, but your communication or lack of is the bigger issue. Not impressed with this company and for the money we paid many things could have been handled better.

Negative experience: Buyers beware of misleading advertisement. Tried purchasing a lot from Crystal Davis last year and it was a total mess. First the land would cost us 65k. She is also the contractor so she was in also in charge of building the home . Gave a deposit and Had 3 different non Productive meetings with her. It seemed like she wanted to make money off of everything she was going to do for us. She even wrote in the contract that we could expect the prices to Fluctuate at over 100% of the price given to us to build the home as Materials were very expensive . That’s when we decided to pull out of the deal ! Very disappointing that she is able to get away with this type of scam!! DO NOT be fooled. Be careful!!

Negative experience: Left a detailed message with the broker. No response. It was an inquiry into getting a right of way. The bank told me they've tried to send a letter with no response to the same broker. A return call would have been appropriate with a simple answer. Buyer/seller beware, caveat emptor.

Fantastic experience: We had tried a different realtor before meeting Newell Collins at Appalachian. What a difference. The first agency tried to sell some really "sleazy" deals, but Newell was totally different. He told us upfront he would work with us until we found the house of our dreams and he did. He took us to homes we told him WE wanted to see, that he suspected would not meet our desires. He spent his time allowing us to discover what he knew about the area. A real gem. His patience paid off as we kept learning and eventually found the home that checked off every box we defined to Newell, the first day we met him. He really knows Western Carolina and North GA. If you are looking for an honest agent who will help you find what you are looking for, give him a call.

Fantastic experience: WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!! I recently purchase a home on a piece of riverfront property in Murphy, North Carolina. The purchase was through one of this company's brokers, Newell Collins, and I have only glowing reviews. You see, several years ago, I was involved in the real estate market in my home state and have to say that my experience with Mr. Collins was far above and beyond and was exactly what I would have expected from one of my agents. He walked me through every step of the way, explaining the nuances of North Carolina's real estate laws to me and making suggestions as to what avenue I should follow. I was often out of town during the financing process, however Mr. Collins was very helpful in meeting the inspector to allow him access into the home. Even after the purchase was finalized, he was still such a help. He met the ADT installer at the house to allowing him access. He also met the furniture delivery men on two separate occasions. When I need suggestions as to who to call to complete a landscaping project, he provided the name of a very reputable company and even helped me line up a yard maintenance person. I'm sorry that the one person didn't have a good experience, but it sounds as if he thought he knew more than Mr. Collins about making a land purchase in N.C. Pity, that was his loss.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I have bought 10 different properties (land) and one home in the Murphy area. Each and every one of them was bought and sold with Mr. Newell Collins as our real estate agent. I have referred friends to him and never once were they disappointed in the service Newell provided. He knows the area and has a finger on the pulse of the real estate community. He knows what adjoins a property and what might be happening in the future on most any given piece of land. There is no one I trust more with our real estate dealings than Newell Collins and Appalachian Land Company. Professional, courteous, and straight shooters all the way.

Negative experience: BUYERS BEWARE! When puchasing land in the Murphy area I made the mistake of using this firm for my needs,expecting honesty and integrity,having los a large sum trying to invest in Costa Rica. I chose the firm because an agent there was an aquaintence from Florida whom I had known personally and professionally for several years. Having lost a great deal of money in a Costa Rico project i had learned to only deal with "professionals that I knew and could trust. My mistake! I purchased a 3.17 acre property from ALC and when I subdivided it and had it surveyed it was only 2.68 acres as a portion had been SOLD in 2000! When I complained to the selling and listing agent,Newell Collins,he dismissed the irregularity as a "surveyor's overlap" and was of no concern.When I purchased the property,Mr Collins could not produce the survey as it was misplaced but he assured me it was a GOOD survey,if somewhat dated.Because the utilities{infrastructure} was not inside my property lines the sellers,the Garrett Estate agreed to move the lines to include my utilities,which they did. It cost ME $400 for the new survey and ALC would bear none of the cost nor would they provide me with a new deed reflecting the new property lines. A complaint to the North Carolina Real Estate Commission resulted in a denial of the complaint. I am "up the creek with no paddle" ! No deed to my property....Bill Griffith ,Murphy ,NC.
