Bur-Cal Management

Negative experience: I lived at 1030 West Olive Ave for almost 30 years. At this complex I went from a roommate situation for 8 years, then moved into a studio alone (with my cat) for 10 years, then finally upgraded to a one bedroom for almost 12 years. I've been good friends with Shanon, the former building manager, since 1996. In 2022, i suffered a spinal cord injury at work, which rendered me permanently disabled and unfortunately unable to work. I had to move out of my one bedroom Christmas 2024 because once again Burcal had raised my rent astronomically and I just couldn't afford it. The management company does this because they don't want long-term tenants that are paying less rent than what a new tenant would be paying. So they constantly raise the rent to force legacy tenants like myself out of the building. They rip out the carpeting, put in hardwood floors, double the rent and along come suckers from out of state. The problem with this tactic is that you have a constant turnover of tenants moving in and out every 3-6 months, which is also a very frustrating environment. In any case, I was always a great tenant. I helped look after the building and I always paid rent on time. When I finally was approved for my disability benefits I decided to move back to Burbank and found a nice quiet studio with a balcony at Peyton Ave. Also owned by Burcal. Great! I thought. I left on good terms from my last place and I've never been late on rent. I shouldn't have any issue getting the studio. WRONG. Diana was nice enough but this girl Christina is a piece of work. You could tell she just didn't want to be bothered and cut me off numerous times during our phone call where I was just following up on my application from that previous Friday. Not only did she not care that I was a previous tenant of 30 years, she couldn't have cared less that I was disabled and looking to move back into Burbank. I had paid the extortion of a $40 application fee, which I was told would take about 1 week to do the credit and background check, yet miraculously the very next business day Christina claimed the report came back and they couldn't rent to me because of my 600 credit score. I feel like this is discrimination against someone who's Permanently Disabled and also someone who has a low credit score because of that disability situation. I filed a fraud claim with my bank to get the $40 refunded (BEWARE-IT'S A SCAM), and Bank of America agreed with me. I also plan on pursuing this further against Burcal because this is discrimination.

Fantastic experience: Bur-Cal is amazing. The staff response is fast and the maintenance guys are awesome. No problems whatsoever. I couldn’t recommend them more and I rarely write reviews on here. Thank you for your professionalism and kindness. Sergio the supervisor always takes care of us!

Negative experience: I lived at a Bur-Cal managed property from about 2017 to 2021 at 376 N Hollywood Way. I have waited until I finally became a home owner to post this review, knowing I will ABSOLUTELY never have to rent from them again: In 2019 my wife and I were experiencing random bouts of dizziness and other weird symptoms, we thought we may have had some virus but the symptoms persisted. We tried everything and eventually that included having a tech come out to test for carbon monoxide. Lo and behold, they found 5 times the amount in our kitchen which was not ventilated properly. We immediately turned off our gas and notified Bur-Cal who moved at about a snail’s pace to fix it. At one point I called them and told them I was going to deduct the square footage of the kitchen from our rent since we can’t use it. The woman I was speaking with, Ashley, told me I could not do that. I told her that I felt I could since the kitchen was useless and “our appliances are literally killing us.” To which Ashley responded, and I quote: “Well, not ALL of your appliances are killing you.” End quote. To this day my wife gets feelings of vertigo and is on medication. Rent from Bur-Cal at your own risk. And Ashley if you still work there and can see this, I got a new kitchen and my appliances are much more well behaved. I hope the same can be said for your tenants’. ✌️

Negative experience: They took my home. Pure greed, and vindictiveness rules Diana Ramirez, the manager at bur cal. She was cruel to me and also acting out of spite. I had been awarded ERAP Covid relief program to pay for my backrent which they refused. They wanted to charge triple what I was paying, and they push lower earning people to the streets. When I went back to get my packages, property manager blew me off, ignored my calls. Unscrupulous, corrupt enterprise. Don't rent here.

Fantastic experience: My experience with Burcal Management has been wonderful. We moved into one of their properties a little over a year ago. The building is wonderful, safe and secure, clean, and friendly. The manager "Tim" is awesome. The building owner has been great and seems very nice. As well as If we need anything fixed it is addressed in a timely manner. The rent is reasonable. It was a good move, and we are very happy.

Positive experience: Although the complex is over 30 years old, it is well-maintained and the onsite management team is the best I've experienced in over 20 years of apartment living. The one bedroom & den that we live in is spacious, comfortable, and has a great view! I'd recommend Canyon Club Senior Apartments to anyone!!!

Positive experience: I have lived at one of their buildings for the last year. So far it has been a great experience, Bur Cal is quick to work on any maintenance required, they keep the building clean and they are friendly. I only deduct a star because rent is a little bit too expensive.

I am so appreciative of the amenities, the management team and owners. The facility is well maintained and secured. There are endless events field trips that feed my adventurous spirit. My daughter will attain age 55 in a few years and she can’t wait to join me

Fantastic experience: Leasing managers Derrick & Christina are very helpful and respond in a timely manner, they made leasing process as simple as it could get. The availability of filling out applications and touring properties was very convenient. The property is well maintained and cleaned on a weekly basis. Maintenance request are easy to make & taken care of in a vey timely manner & also at your convenience. Larry is a great on- site apartment manager & is always on-site with a friendly smile. Laundry, pool & jacuzzi areas are maintained clean. Family oriented community and great neighbors! Parking garage is convenient with easy elevator access.

Negative experience: Had my 2 vehicles damaged on one of their properties and had to resort to opening a security gate by hand. After being forced out and emailing the city for help. Nothing had been done besides some bandaids and paint on the building. Raised rent as soon as my first lease was up.

Negative experience: Bur-Cal Management is heartless and insensitive. I have been a tenant here for over 25 years and never missed a rental payment. I'm 89 years old, I live alone and on the verge of my 90th birthday, they have raised my rent by an unreasonable amount, without adequate notice ahead of time. As a retired senior citizen, I live with a regimented budget, and the significant and unexpected rent hikes put an unreasonable hardship on my existence. It's no surprise to me that Bur-Cal would do something like this as they have no loyalty to their long-time tenants. Bur-Cal management has raised my rent over 30% in the last 5 years alone, not including this most recent increase. Think about that, 5 years ago, I was 85 years old. And the last 8 years, my rent has increased approximately $1500.00 per month! I've attempted to speak to the management several times, both over the phone and in person at their office, regarding such matters, but always received a condescending response and no willingness for flexibility. I don't know what else to say other than I wonder if the executives at Bur-Cal management would treat their own grandparents with such disregard.

Fantastic experience: I'm giving five stars to Derek Tafua. He is a strong asset for Burcal. I've got to know most of their service workers over the years and they are also a Burcal asset. Shout out to Sergio!

Fantastic experience: I lived in a Bur Cal Property for 10 years and they were wonderful. On the few occasions I had trouble with something (my bathroom flooded and they were out to fix it within 20-30 min on a weekend!) they took care of it quickly. I had an on site building manager and that helped a lot. They were also very kind and understanding during the recent Covid 19 nightmare. I highly recommended them.

Negative experience: If you want your rent to constantly go up look no further. Also maintenance request are a joke it's going on 10 months waiting for the wood rotted threshold to be fixed. They have come out twice to look at it and never returned.

Negative experience: Shady company. I was robbed on two separate occasions by the staff. Extremely unprofessional. Avoid at all costs.

Negative experience: This is the kind of business you deal with because you have to, not because you want to. In two years of interactions have I seldom encountered anything approaching kindness or concern in any of Bur-Cal's representatives. They are in it for the money, and every interaction is transactional and impersonal. At each turn, Bur-Cal makes it clear that terms will be to their advantage and your disadvantage. When they sent us a note asking for the rent, we paid that amount. Three months later they realized they'd put the wrong amount (by $35) and charged us an extra fee, plus threatened us with eviction if we didn't respond in less than a day and made us pay only by cashier's check, never owning up to their own mistake. Since they decided to remove our on-site managers, we can no longer leave our rent on premises and have to drive to headquarters each month to deliver it. Did the rent go down due to the lack of benefits of an on-site manager? No, they upped our rent by $110. When I once forgot to pay rent on time, they waited until the three-day grace period was over to inform me I owed an extra, exorbitant late fee (hundreds of dollars). Once I kept a family heirloom in the parking garage next to my car for a while, and they threw it out without consulting me. Just tonight, for the first time after two years living at one of their properties, I forgot my keys and they charged me $50 to open up my apartment. So, I figured they'd earned this review. One positive: they are okay with repairs, usually responding pretty quickly.

Negative experience: Shady company. Some handsome Hollywood lookin guy will make it sound like he'll get you into an apartment, then deny you once you pay the fees and turn into a real ass. Avoid this company.
